“There are some arenas so corrupt that the only clean acts possible are nihilistic.” - Quellcrist Falconer (Richard Morgan, Altered Carbon)
This is a blog about cyberpunk, that volatile mix of technophilia, technophobia, urban decay, transhumanism, hypercapitalism, underground resistance, organized crime and government control, a subgenre of science fiction that constantly gets more real every day.
I started, like most people did, by reading Gibsons Neuromancer and the rest, and moved on to stuff like Sterlings Heavy weather, Islands in the Net and Neal Stephensons Snow Crash (which is, quite possibly, the best cyberpunk ever written). The cyberpunk wave thrived in the early 1990s, fuelled by societys fascination by the possibilites of the Internet and increasing computer saturation. Then it sort of fizzled out, as the Net turned out to be not quite as revolutionary as cyberpunk writers imagined. We didn’t get neural jacks, no Matrix or Street, no sentient AIs. Instead we got Twitter, Youtube and Facebook which, while still useful and a huge thing for many people, ain’t that exciting to write about (unless you’re talented like Charles Stross in Rule 34 or Stephenson in REAMDE).
Instead, Epic Space Opera (another one of my favorite subgenres), fantasy (crap about glittering vampires and fairy/werebear romance) and near-future scifi seem to be the trend these days.
Well, I want to get back to those wonderful days of cyberpunk, when street gangs had mohawks and rode futuristic motorcycles, when the Yakuza ruled the megacorps and the Internet was for hacking international banks and exposing government secrets, a time when implants where awesome, bulky things and everything cool was asian.
This blog is about that wave of Cyberpunk, mostly. The old wave. But new wave cyberpunk (like, for instance, Richard Morgans Altered Carbon) is welcome too. I’ll be posting mostly cyberpunk art here, or inspirational photos and gadgets, but I’ll try to publish tips on litterature, movies etc, and last but not least; news from the real world that touches on cyberpunk culture or themes.
You can help out. Please do; comment, send me submissions, tips, links, maybe you’ll even guest blog something here? I’ll kickstart this, but hopefully we’ll have some collaboration going soon.
